The Kurfürstendamm (also known as the Ku´Damm) is a main road with a total length of 3,5km. It is located at Berlin’s Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. It is very popular with tourists since there are lots of shopping opportunities here.

The Kurfürstendamm was created in 1542 when as a bridle path for the “Kurfürsten”. Earlier it was placed between the Berlin castle and the “Jagdschloss” Grunewald. But Bismarck wished to alter the street to a boulevard, having the Champs-Elysées in Paris in his mind. After the First World War the Kurfürstendamm developed from an exclusive housing area into a cultural centre.
Nowadays, it improved further to an exclusive shopping mile.

In between your shopping trips, the Ku´Damm offers a lot of possibilities to take a break in one of the many cafés. Furthermore, there are some theatres and museums. It offers everything for everyone.

At the Breitscheidplatz on the Kurfürstendamm you will find the Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche (also just known as Gedächtniskirche), which is a memorial to the Second World War. You can visit it every day and there are Sunday services every Sunday.

If you do not want to be in the middle of all the tourists you can go to one of the side roads of the Kurfürstendamm. Here you will find both extravagant possibilities for shopping and good opportunities to enjoy a coffee.

The interactive museum “The Story of Berlin” is very famous as well and it is also situated on the Kurfürstendamm. Here you will learn a lot about the story of Berlin which goes back some 800 years. This museum is like no other; visitors are enveloped in all sorts of aromas, sounds and things to touch. That makes “The Story of Berlin” even interesting for people who do not like museums normally.

Once you are there you should also visit the air raid shelter, which is below the Kurfürstendamm. This one is still active today and in case of a nuclear disaster it could supply 3600 people with food for 14 days.
