Your 2minute Rome Guide
The Vittorio Emanuele II was constructed to honor Victor Emmanuel which was the first ever king of a unified Italy. It is situated amongst other famous Roman monuments such as the Piazza Venezia and Capitoline Hill.
The monument is built of pure white marble and features majestic stairways and tall fountains with statues and sculptures. Interestingly, the base of the structure houses the museum of Italian Reunification. The monument also holds the tomb of an unknown soldier with an eternal flame.
The monument was controversial because its construction destroyed a large area of Capitoline Hill. As a result, the monument is often regarded as being too large and pompous. The monument has a grand view of the city of Rome and is also clearly visible. The monument itself is boxy and lacks a unique shape. It also doesn’t sport a tower or a dome, which usually accompanies monuments of this size in Rome. Being glaringly white it makes it highly conspicuous amidst the generally brownish buildings surrounding it, and it has earned it several derogatory nicknames. It has received nicknames from both the locals and foreigners. The Romans refer to it as ¨the wedding cake¨, ¨false teeth¨ and the Americans refer to it as the ¨type writer.¨
It is welcoming to know that despite all of the aforementioned nicknames, the monument still attracts numerous tourists every year. For a more recent portrayal of the monument, you can see it in the film; ¨The Core.¨ In order to enjoy and maximize your experience of the city of Rome, it is advisable to arrange your accommodation at one of the many Rome appartementen.
