This exciting The Comics and Cartoon Festival: which includes exhibitions, cartoon film showings and meeting with the most famous designers and publishing companies, takes place every October and has become a popular attraction with both tourists and comic fans alike. After months and months of organization, this professional, star studded event will take place at Nuova Fiera di Roma starting on the 2nd Oct and finishing on 5th. Each year the programme of events gets more jam packed with goodies, with increasingly more workshops and talks. In 2004 the University of Comics collaborated with the Faculty of Communication Sciences and Humanistic Sciences of “La Sapienza” University of Rome and the Universities of Lecce and Salerno, together with the IULM University of Milan. Added to this, several university professors and a Scientific Committee, who have dedicated their life to comics, have contributed to the project.

Within the University of Comics a series of lessons on the history, technique and language of comics are held by the masters of the international comics, the guest stars of the event, who introduce theories and techniques used for their works. These lessons, which are actually real university workshops, give the possibility to both university students and secondary school students to get credits valid for their academic curriculum.

In the past, the festival has offered a variety of workshops, including: “Desires in bubbles: iconography in comics and film” with Enrico Fornaroli; “Disney’s screenplay” with Carlo Chendi; “The editing of Comics” with Roberto Perpignani. Romics festival also includes the participation of international guest stars, professors, writers and publishers, by whom the following events are organised: Workshops with Italian and international comics masters; round tables, meetings and conferences on comics and animated film related to the Italian and international publishing context; lessons on comics history and film animation held by Italian and international professors; theory lessons with a practical approach on comics technique held by Italian and international writers; lessons on comics language and film animation and meetings with the main Italian comics publishers who will introduce their future projects.

Since 2004 Romics has been twinned with the World Cosplay Summit of Nagoya in Japan, organized by the Japanese Television Aichi. “The Cosplay Romics Award” is Italy’s number one prize for Cosplay enthusiasts. “Cosplay” is the contraction of two English words, “costume” and “player”. Cosplayers dress up as their favourite comics, cartoon or games character, creating the costumes and acting out scenes and situations.

Two thousand visitors, thousands of cosplayers and more than four hours of non – stop entertainment make the Cosplay Romics Award so special. Each year, the Cosplay jury, in which a WCS delegate takes part, chooses the Italian team to compete in the next WCS. In order not to miss this special event, book your Rome accommodation early!
