I have a quick suggestion list of some 2 interesting monuments to see in Rome, especially appealing if you enjoy learning a bit of history on your holidays!

Take for example; “The Obelisk” in St. Peter’s Square. It was transported to Rome from Egypt in 37 AD, does not bear any hieroglyphics, and is surely Rome’s most famous obelisk from ancient times. Emperor Caligula wanted the obelisk to be transported from Elaiopoli (Cairo City), in order to decorate Nero’s Circus. Perhaps the most fascinating thing about this Obelisk, apart from its impressive size, is that there are many legends about this extraordinary monument. The best known is the belief that Julius Cesar’s ashes were stored in the top of the obelisk. Near to this square you will find there is an abundance of Rome accommodation available…

Hate it or love it, the Victor Emmanuel Monument is an impressive monument that you shouldn’t miss if you have time. This monument was built to honor Italy’s first king who united the city states into the country of Italy. However, popular Roman comments about this monument are somewhat negative. They refer to it as the “birthday cake,” the “typewriter” or “dentures.” The monument is made of white marble and is very large in proportion to the other monuments in Rome. On the monument is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal flame, a tribute to all those who died in World War One. The climb to the top is a workout, but you can enjoy an excellent view. The monument is also dedicated to “Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia”, the first king of Italy. It is called also “Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II” (National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II) or “Altare della Patria” (Altar of the Fatherland).
